Navigating Summer Break: Tips for Neurodivergent Moms Balancing Household and Parenting

Hey there, fellow neurodivergent mamas!

Can we all agree that summer break is like a rollercoaster ride without a seatbelt? As a neurospicy mom of two neurospicy little humans, I know firsthand the struggles of keeping the household afloat while managing the wild energy of kiddos during the sunny summer months. So, grab your iced coffee, soda water, or wine, and let's chat about some sanity-saving tips to help us navigate this summertime madness.

Embrace the Chaos: Look, summer break is basically controlled chaos, right? Instead of fighting it, let's embrace the madness. Set realistic expectations for yourself and your kiddos. Remember, it's okay if things don't always go according to plan. Give yourself permission to go with the flow.

Create a Flexible Routine: I know, I know, routine sounds like a dirty word when you're a free-spirited mama like me. But trust me, having a loose schedule can be a lifesaver. Create a simple routine that includes mealtimes, outdoor play, and quiet activities. And don't forget to schedule in some "mom time" for yourself. You deserve it!

Get Outside and Soak Up the Sun: Nature is our best friend, mamas. Take advantage of the warmer weather and spend as much time outdoors as possible. Whether it's a trip to the park, a nature hike, or just playing in the backyard, fresh air and sunshine can work wonders for our neurodivergent souls.

Sensory-Friendly Activities FTW: As a former special education teacher, I've seen the power of sensory play firsthand. Get creative with sensory-friendly activities like water play, kinetic sand, or DIY sensory bins. Not only will it keep the kiddos entertained, but it's also a great way to calm those frazzled mama nerves.

Make a Plan to Meet Your Sensory Needs: From one neurodivergent mom to another, you deserve and need to have your sensory needs met. When we prioritize our wellness, we give our kids a happy and calm mama. Find three places in your day where you can incorporate a sensory break for yourself. Whether it be using headphones, a 5-minute couch rest with a weighted blanket, eating a cool popsicle, crunching on a salty snack, or squishing a favorite fidget, your nervous system wellness deserves to be prioritized.

Lean on Your Support Network: Mama, you don't have to do this alone. Reach out to friends, family, or other moms in your community for support. Whether it's scheduling playdates, swapping childcare, or just venting over a virtual coffee date, having a support network can make all the difference.

Catch you on the sunny side,
